Mission Moments: Nepal

Building the church in Humla

By Gary Fallesen
Founding President, Climbing For Christ

Parker Harris is using his peak-bagging powers for good. The Climbing For Christ member from Houston, Texas has – for the second time in three years – turned his climb of Denali into a fundraising event.

“Let’s build a church together” was the subject line on the email Parker sent to family and friends before heading for Alaska to attempt North America’s tallest mountain.

Parker is helping us raise the US$19,300 needed to purchase land to build the first church in Nepal’s Far West district of Humla. He has a donor matching up to $10,000; so far, he has raised $4,884, according to his Web site sevensummitsmountaineering.com.

In 2012, Parker raised $4,250 for the building of a church in Nepal’s Mid-West.

We give thanks to Parker and to God for Parker. He is the kind of member we are looking for – one who is willing to turn what otherwise is a fairly self-centered pastime into a Christ-centered effort in which God, not man is glorified.

For many years, we have encouraged members to do a CLIMBATHON. That is, turn a mountain climb into a fundraising event. It’s pretty simple. Pick a peak, ask a few people to sponsor your climb, and put one foot in front of the other.

The C4C staff will be doing multiple CLIMBATHONs again this year. Spiritual coordinator Jordan Rowley will head for the hills in June, and Elaine Fallesen and I will take a hike in July (after we return from Mission: Ararat and before I head off again on Mission: Kilimanjaro). All three of us are looking for sponsors; email info@ClimbingForChrist.org if you are interested. Email gfallesen@ClimbingForChrist.org if you would like to sponsor Parker on Denali.

How can YOU help?
  • Pray for the construction of the church in Humla. It would be the first church building in the district, which is about the size of the U.S. state of Delaware.
  • Give financially to help us buy land for the building of this trip.
  • Go on the second of two Mission: Nepal 2014 expeditions in September (a trek to evangelize Sherpa people in the Makalu area) or Mission: Nepal 2015 in March (returning to Humla for the fourth time in 2½ years). To request a mission application, email info@ClimbingForChrist.org.

To support the work in Nepal, send a donation to Climbing For Christ, c/o Helping Hands: Nepal, P.O. Box 16290, Rochester, NY 14616-0290 USA. Or CLICK HERE and give online via PayPal.

The Word

“Go up to the hills and bring wood and build the house, that I may take pleasure in it and that I may be glorified, says the LORD.” – Haggai 1:8 (ESV)
