Christ, our cornerstone

By Gary Fallesen, founding president, Climbing For Christ

“What is this church building constructed from?” I asked our Nepali brothers and sisters in Christ as they sat on the ground inside what was then an unfinished structure.

The correct answer: stones.

“What is our foundation as a church body?” I asked.

Answer: God.

“God tells the prophet Isaiah (in Isaiah 28:16), ‘I am the One who has laid as a foundation … a stone, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, of a sure foundation,’” I said as we dedicated this church to the LORD on Sept. 24 during Mission: Nepal 2016, Part 2.

Psalm 118:22 tells us ‘the stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone.’ The builders were the leaders who did not believe Jesus was God. Jesus lived, died and lived again. The Bible tells us ‘no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ’ (1 Corinthians 3:11).

“Jesus is our Rock. That’s Who we build this church upon. That’s Who we build our whole lives upon.”

The church (the body of Christ) finished work on the first house of worship to be built in the Far West district of Humla after our team left. We praise the LORD for this building. It is the fourth church we have been blessed to see built in Nepal since 2011, and the ninth house God has used us to help construct worldwide (including three in Haiti and one each in Mozambique and Peru). God has called us to build up the church and to build churches. For HIS glory!

“…and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” –  Matthew 16:18 (ESV)
