Photo of the Week: Peru
Photo of the Week: The church at Chalhua, Peru by Jordan Rowley.
Jordan Rowley took this week’s photo on July 24 during Mission: Peru 2015. This is the house that God built through Climbing For Christ. The church has its roots in our first Evangelic Expedition to Peru in 2011. A woman in this village in the Cordillera Blanca mountain range started a church in her house in 2009. By the time our team arrived in May 2011, the believers had outgrown the woman’s house. She and a visiting pastor from a large Pentecostal denomination asked Climbing For Christ to build a church in that dirt-poor mountain village sitting at 11,900 feet (3,625 meters).
We promised to pray about it.
Eighteen months later, a sister in Christ at Living Water Christian Fellowship in Rochester, NY, felt the Spirit place on her heart the desire to leave a legacy on foreign soil she would never see. She wanted to fund the building of a church. We told her about Chalhua, Peru, and she donated the seed money – used to buy the land and start construction.
The cost was far greater than that Pentecostal pastor originally estimated. C4C continued to raise support in 2013 and 2014, and our Peruvian missionary, Jaime Servat, did his best to oversee the construction of this church. Even now, there is a need for more support to apply the finishing touches. But during Mission: Peru 2015, the church was dedicated and is open for the Lord’s business.
There is no way to put a pricetag on the value of a church like this in the Majority World. Climbing For Christ has been blessed to build churches in Haiti, Mozambique, Nepal and Peru. We exist to build the church (the body of Christ) in places where others cannot or will not go.
“…and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” – Matthew 16:18 (ESV)
