Building the church in Nepal’s Far West
By Gary Fallesen
Founding president, Climbing For Christ
I stood on a hill overlooking the snow-covered lot where the church at Simikot proposes to build Humla’s first house of worship. I prayed for God to show me that this was His will. I felt my heart begin to race and a Spirit-induced excitement filled my body. I could see it – again.
Climbing For Christ exists to build up the church. To GO where others cannot or will not to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ and grow a body of believers. Then, when prompted, C4C builds churches. In four villages in Haiti, three locations in Nepal, and towns in Mozambique and Peru.
God has stirred in us during Mission: Nepal expeditions to the Far West district of Humla a desire to give our new brothers and sisters in Christ a home church.
“First of all in Simikot, the headquarters of Humla, most of the houses belong to Buddhist and Hindu people so they do not want to allow us to have a place here to worship,” Pastor Harka told us in March during Mission: Nepal 2015. “We do have a rented place now, but it is too small to accommodate the whole church. So we have been praying for three years for land here in Simikot.
“Recently, God seems to be opening a door to purchase land.”
This land – albeit expensive – and the house of worship that will eventually be built on it “is not a warehouse (standing idly), but a powerhouse,” as church leader Thana said. It is an expression that Nepali C4C member Megh Gurung has used often.
Thana points to the future: possible site for new church in the Himalayas.
“Those who are sick or demon-possessed can be released and rescued,” Thana declared. “So many people will come and everyone will see the church and know that it’s a place where the Christians worship. It will be a way to reach out to the people.”
Climbing For Christ is in the process of helping the church at Simikot purchase land. In His time, we also plan on helping them build a church for all to see and many new Christians to use to sing His praises and glorify His name.
“ …and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” – Matthew 16:18 (ESV)
