Mission Moments: Haiti (May 30, 2013)

Haiti hungers for food, fruit of the Spirit

Three pastors and 17 church leaders attended our monthly Monte Pou Kris seminary in Thoman, Haiti last Saturday. The lesson, prepared by spiritual coordinator Jordan Rowley, focused on the Fruit of the Spirit. This was part 2 of a three-month study and covered love, joy and peace. “The seminary was very good,” said Miguel Rubén Guante, Climbing For Christ’s national missionary to Haiti.

Miguel calls May and June the “famine months” – that time when the last harvest has been consumed and new crops are not ready to pick. We attempted to increase agricultural production in March, but “the storm(s) came and destroyed all,” Miguel said. “We gave bean seed and fertilizer to help, but our efforts are in vain.”

Hunger returns to the hills of Haiti, which remains one of poorest nations on the planet. More than half of Haiti’s population lives on less than $1 a day, according to the World Bank. Those in the mountains survive on even less, which is probably unimaginable unless you have stood amidst this poverty.

As always, Haiti needs to be shown the positive traits of godly character exhibited by Christians abiding in the Spirit.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness…” – Galatians 5:22 (ESV)
