Mission Moments: Malawi

From the gift of shoes to God’s victorious feat

Damson Samson spent Malawi’s Independence Day (July 6) and CHRISTmas eve 2018 with those in the Mulanje Prison. It capped our Malawi-based African worker’s first year of serving those in prison.

Before delivering a CHRISTmas message – and 500 pairs of shoes provided through funding by Climbing For Christ – Damson took his latest visit to the Lord. God gave him Acts 12:1-17 (Peter’s rescue from prison) and a vision of “angels standing at the four corners of the prison.”

After he preached more than 400 prisoners prayed to ask Jesus into their lives. “The love of the Lord was extended by the physical gifts we shared, shoes to their feet,” Damson said. “What a victory the Lord gave us!”

“They marveled for such a blessing and really appreciated Climbing For Christ for this.”

Damson desires to start a Bible study for those in prison. He established a committee, which will help him facilitate future ministry inside the prison.

“The dream is there to hold them even when they are out, so we can (keep them from) letting the darkness take them over,” he said. “I am hoping in this 2019 we will have of such time. On December 25 (2017), I prayed for them and over 70 were pardoned. I wondered why this time many were found back in the prison. The answer is they need someone who can nurture them outside the prison, so they can see this great love of God, rather than hatred and discrimination.

“Most of these (prisoners) have destructive homes. They left home for 10 years only to come back and find the wife is married to another man and children are out of school with no future and hope. These things contribute to driving them back (to committing crimes and returning to prison).”

Damson said many have a sense of worthlessness rather than realizing their importance in the eyes of the Lord.

The Word

“Because you are precious in my eyes, and honored, and I love you, I give men in return for you, peoples in exchange for your life.” – Isaiah 43:4 (ESV)
