Mission: Peru 2021

Following in the footsteps

Edwin Milla, right, with his cousin Ruben, in 2017 on the summit of Huascarán, the highest point in Peru at 22,205 feet/6,768 meters.

Edwin Milla was the son of a mountain guide who followed in his father’s footsteps. Along the way, he was led to follow Jesus and then in the bootsteps of Climbing For Christ’s late Kingdom worker Jaime Servat.

Edwin joined Climbing For Christ in 2009 and became co-coordinator of C4C Peru on our inaugural Mission: Peru 2011. He accepted a call to serve as C4C’s Kingdom worker in September 2019 – after our indigenous missionary and C4C Peru co-leader Jaime died from cancer.

Edwin has guided six of our seven Mission: Peru expeditions (his brother Marco guided the other one), and Edwin is preparing to lead our 2021 trip.

To get ready, Edwin has studied missiology. “I entered this (online) school to take advantage of the time that we are in quarantine,” he said, “to learn more about the work of a missionary in the field as well as to learn techniques to evangelize lost people.

“I was already thinking about how to apply the teachings learned in the missiology course around the mountains – what we have been doing since Mission: Peru 2011, implemented with a more practical message. We will use a material called ‘Book Without Words.’ This material is very good to teach the message of salvation to people who cannot read.

“In August, the second level of missiology will begin. This level is more practical. The first level was more theoretical. I am sure in the second half they will teach us more strategies and we can apply them in our missions around the mountains.”

He has learned the importance of the work of missionaries around the world. “Our work as missionaries is greater than that of a pastor,” he said. “I thank God for this privilege.”

He is eager to fulfill the Great Commission.

Edwin, who continues to run a guiding company that was impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and his country’s lockdowns, said he is “preparing myself spiritually and physically” for Mission: Peru 2021. “COVID-19 has changed everything about travel. For example, in Peru the government has imposed a series of rules, regulations, and drastic measures so a (regular) person will not be able to organize adventure trips or expeditions. Thank God, I will be able to organize through my agency.”

MISSION: 2021. We will return to the Alpamayo Circuit in northern Peru’s Cordillera Blanca range in October. Trekking in Peru is strenuous, covering many miles every day and crossing over numerous mountain passes between 14,000 and 16,000 feet. The area is very remote and rarely visited by many people. We use the trek to do outreach among isolated farmers living in this part of the spectacular Peruvian Andes. This will be Climbing For Christ’s eighth expedition to Peru in 11 years, and the first since 2018. COVID-19 cancelled Mission: Peru 2020.
