On a day when Nigerian member Chris Joseph said he lacked words “to express my heartfelt appreciation” for the Climbing For Christ support that will allow him to reopen his church, word came of more religious riots in Jos, Nigeria. Hundreds of Christians and Muslims have been killed in riots that began Jan. 17 when Muslim youths attacked a Catholic church and burned other church buildings.

Nigeria was the focus of our Project Prayer during the week of Jan. 4. Northern Nigeria is ranked 27th on the 2010 World Watch List by Open Doors, which monitors global persecution against Christians.

Chris Joseph, a Climbing For Christ member since April 2009, is from the North. But his church is now on the coast in Port Harcourt. That doesn’t make doing the Lord’s work any easier.

On New Year’s, Chris asked for our prayers “because of the challenges I have been facing, both financially and ministerially.” The landlord of the building that was home to his Lives Aglow Global Outreach church (also known as the Wonderland Chapel) had evicted him for failure to pay his rent, and his wife was “pregnant to the point of delivery.” God put on our heart to ask what was needed. US$1,000 was required for a year’s rent, but it might as well have been $1 million from where Chris was sitting.

Funds were wired to Chris the first week of February 2010.

“I am highly delighted and grateful,” Chris said, “for kick-starting the ministry so the devil will be humiliated.”

“I am trusting God to commence church immediately (after) I get the hall,” he added. “I intend organizing a five-day crusade with the theme, ‘If God be God,’ and on the Sunday which will be the grand finale, we will hold our inaugural Sunday service.”

We trust that the first service in this hall will be a time of celebrating and thanking God for His provision. All glory to Him!
